City of Colton Administration and Personnel Code Amendment

Measure O would amend the City of Colton Municipal Code to change the position of Colton City Treasurer from an elected one, to an appointed position.

This measure requires approval by a majority of voters voting on the measure to pass.

Fiscal Impact: Measure O would save the city an unspecified amount of money in election related costs.

Background

Currently in Colton, an elected City Treasurer serves a four year term. California law requires that general law cities, like Colton, have either an elected or appointed City Treasurer.  However, a transition from an elected City Treasurer to an appointed City Treasurer must be approved by a majority of the City’s voters voting at an election.

Proposal

If approved, Measure O would amend the City of Colton Municipal Code to change the position of Colton City Treasurer from an elected one, to an appointed position. If this occurs, the City Council will appoint the next City Treasurer when the term of the current incumbent expires in November, 2028.
