Proposition 14

Bond to Fund Stem Cell Research Institute

Would authorize $5.5 billion in state general obligation bonds to fund grants from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to educational, nonprofit, and private entities for stem cell and other medical research. $1.5 billion of the funds would be dedicated to research and therapy for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, epilepsy, and other brain and central nervous system diseases and conditions. Proposition 14 is an initiative statute and statewide bond proposition that requires a simple majority (50% + 1) to pass.

Fiscal Impact: Would increase state costs to repay bonds, estimated at about $260 million per year over the next 30 years for a total estimated cost of $7.8 billion including interest.
