Supporters say that November 3, 2020, Rio Vista voters approved the extension of the existing Measure 0, a ¾-cent sales tax, with 62% voter support. The revenues from Measure O were used to support continued operations of Rio Vista general services; primarily, public safety. Collection of the sales tax continues but unless extended by Rio Vista voters, will expire March 31, 2027. Leading the list of services presently being provided through Measure O are paramedic services to Rio Vista residents along with such other critical services as fire, police services, and public works. Especially given the fact that there is no hospital in the City, keeping adequate paramedic services in place is vital for ALL Rio Vista residents, especially local seniors and youth.
Supporters say that since this is an EXTENSION, keeping this sales tax in place will NOT increase local taxes; and all funds will remain within the City. This simply extends a tax already in place.
A YES vote on this measure means: Extend the 0.75% sales tax through March 2030.
Opponents say that Measure O asks Rio Vista voters to extend the existing three-quarter-percent (¾ %) sales tax for another three years to fund “general city services,” including police, fire, parks, and other unrestricted expenditures.
Opponents argue that the City has not solved its underlying budget problems and now asks residents to continue paying higher taxes without accountability. While the measure sounds routine, it actually continues a temporary tax that was supposed to expire. Sales tax increases make everyday purchases more expensive, groceries, clothing, school supplies, and basic necessities. Families already struggling with rising costs will feel this burden immediately.
A NO vote on this measure means: Do not extend the 0.75% sales tax after March 31, 2027.
